Ostensibly it takes two particular traits for an artist to repurpose something that’s become a part of the zeitgeist: Talent and Bravado. With his flip of Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” L.A.-producer Knxwledge proves (yet again) that he has both.
Knxwledge keys in on the endlessly memeable portion of the Astroworld cut where Drizzy Drake spits about popping half a Xan and passing the hell out on a 13-hour flight. But where the original Hit-Boy production was lurching, organ-laced menaced, Knxwledge gives us a fluttering number replete with flute sounds and wah-wahing guitars. Instead of puffing out its chest, it’s entirely in its head. The sort of warm, hazy dream someone might have after munching half a minor tranquilizer 30,000 feet in the air.
