Four Tet- “Scientists”

Four Tet-New Energy

Damn Kieran Hebden. Damn him. His gorgeous new house-leaning effort from forthcoming LP New Energy mercilessly “robs” listeners of a total emotional release. “Scientists” (nothing to do with Coldplay) is situated on glacially panning synth noises and these twitchy little percussive noises that have the same delightful fizzle to them as a freshly opened bottle of Coke. Add in a melodious R&B vocal or two, some harpish string sounds and that’s effectively what “Scientists” is.

It’s a quietly rebellious and passively defiant song that gives us all this gorgeousity without ever delivering any big “payoff” or escape. There’s no beat drop or moment where Hebden breaks the song open. Instead, he submerges in this track and never lets us leave. And honestly, while it’d be nice to see such warm emotions through, why go anywhere else when this is the landscape you’re given.
