Top Tracks: The National- “Carin at the Liquor Store”

The National- Sleep Well Beast

The National aren’t the indie rock band crafting songs that will obliterate your emotions and make you cry in seconds flat. That’s not their style. Theirs has always been a slow and subtle emotional devastation. Little by little things will stack up until you’re totally overwhelmed. In the case of new single “Carin at the Liquor Store,” the band’s third from the forthcoming Sleep Well Beast, it’s a stately piano line. And Matt Berninger’s honey whiskey soaked voice asking a loved one to “blame it on me, I really don’t care, it’s a foregone conclusion.” And it’s a pent-up guitar solo scrawling across the quiet track before disappearing into the static. It’s all of those things working together that makes “Carin at the Liquor Store” work on such a heart-rending level. Subtract any one element and it’s just not the same. Which is sort of how we as emotive human beings function. We’re not the sums of one or two moods or feelings, we’re all of it together. We’re love and regret and blame and anger and joy and fear. The National intuitively understand that and deliver such poignant complexity as so few can.

Sleep Well Beast is out a month from now (Sept. 8). They’ve got a fall tour to support the record and you can find those dates below.
