For such a light and effervescent sounding debut, R&B newcomer Linzi Jai manages to work in some deceptively complicated thoughts about love and relationships on his single “Morose.” The recent 20xx label signee flat-out croons at one point that “love ain’t always promised” over bubbling percussion and gentle sighs. It’s a marked contrast comparable to a sunny kids song saying your parents tell lies to you sometimes. Love songs about holding someone down don’t often reject the eternality of love. Love’s gonna disappear sometimes. Or it won’t even show up to begin with. In the latter case, there’s no real loss. With the former, that’s when it becomes critical to know what’s wanted and what’s needed. Though he’s just getting going, Jai already seems to know what’s needed when promises start drifting away.
