EMA- “Down and Out”

EMA- Down and Out

EMA is one of the most vital politically charged musicians we have going. Not because she’s able to give some succinct breakdown of why the American Health Care Act (AHCA) might lead to 22 million more uninsured Americans or how a geopolitical ally such as Saudi Arabia isn’t always operating in good faith. Erika Michelle Anderson’s music is so politically vital in our present age because she can ably mind the gap between broader politics and personal politics. A song such as “Active Shooter” doesn’t simply remind us that a supermajority of mass shooters are men or that guns might well be too accessible to those with mal intent, it’s a harrowing reminder that there are lives that have been permanently uprooted.

EMA’s latest song from her forthcoming third record, Exile in the Outer Ring, adeptly blends the personal and the political like “Active Shooter.” As a song, “Down and Out” serves as a strong condemnation of the notion that being poor is somehow a signifier of lack of character or strong will. While that sounds almost obvious to say, there are some out there with strong Social Darwinist/bootstrap mentalities who’ve convinced themselves that a can-do attitude is all it takes to climb out of poverty. That’s bullshit of course and EMA says as much over the loping production of “Down and Out.” In a vocal style that recalls Elliott Smith, she exhales “don’t go away” and that’s more than enough to cling to. It’s a simple message, sure, but no less meaningful than some grand oratory from some senator in Washington D.C.

Exile In The Outer Ring drops August 25 on City Slang. Check out her fall tour dates below.
