Off-kilter pop artist Grace Lightman’s new single “Fangs” concerns “a world where she questions what it means to be human through the use of an otherworldly alter ego, the Silver Eater,” though not knowing that or understanding what it means doesn’t hamper the song in any way whatsoever. Lightman’s airy Del Rey-esque vocals pitted against rough drum knocks that would make the Cool Kids proud is the secret to this tune’s success. How detached she sounds in her wishing, even in the song’s most surging moments, makes it work. It’s the sort of mood where you want one thing but are so non-committal that you don’t care if you get the other thing instead. And maybe that’s the answer to Lightman’s questioning of what it means to be human: settling.
