Though he’s stayed busy with features and collabos with the likes of Phantogram, hip hop legend Big Boi hasn’t dropped a solo record since 2012’s Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumours.
That dry spell changes later this week with the release of Boomiverse which Sir Lucious Left Foot has been teasing with tracks such as “Kill Jill” ft. Killer Mike and Jeezy as well as “In the South” with Gucci Mane and the dearly departed Pimp C. And if that flurry wasn’t enough, today Big’s landed one more jab with the insistent electro-rap track “Chocolate.”
“Chocolate” seems carefully calibrated to make heads nod, feet tap and booties shake. The thing’s just pure rhythmic propulsion with Big Boi fueling the dancefloor fire with bottles of Titos and Hennessy. That’s one of the only lyrical takeaways as Big is content to let the beat robotically writhe every which way. While it’s always good to hear one of the best lyricists in the game spit, it’s not a necessity here. Big’s been around long enough to know when to speak out and when to stay out of the way.
Boomiverse is out this Friday and Big Boi’s promised a second sack of songs.
