Grizzly Bear- Mourning Sound

Based on everything that’s been said and written about Grizzly Bear’s fifth LP, Painted Ruins is going to be perhaps the band’s biggest leap forward yet. First single “Three Rings,” with its prog leaning tendencies, certainly hinted at that move. But official lead single “Mourning Sound” fully encases that idea in amber.

“Mourning Sound” isn’t just one of the chamber rock group’s liveliest tunes to date, “Mourning Sound” is a thinly veiled dance-rock track that Stereogum‘s Chris DeVille suggests could be an alternate world LCD Soundsystem. That sort of makes sense but it also recalls pieces of what Tame Impala was on about with its 2015 psychedelic dance rock opus Currents which melded taut pop sensibilities with expansive experimentation. Chris Taylor’s bass playing is about as active as it’s ever been. Chris Bear’s keyboard work punctuates the song at near-perfect moments. The Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen vocal work shows those two can harmonize over any backing and make it sound beautiful. So while “Mourning Sound” brings to mind other bands, it’s core is still unmistakably Grizzly Bear.

As previously mentioned, Grizzly Bear’s new album Painted Ruins is out August 18 via RCA. Check out the album detail here and run through recently announced tour dates below.
