Broken Social Scene- “Hug of Thunder”

Last week brought official news on Hug of Thunder, Broken Social Scene’s first album in seven years. Now we have the title track from the Canadian collective’s new record and it’s a welcome return to form.

“Hug of Thunder,” which features lead vocals from Feist, is the kind of muted rock number that BSS can dial into as well as anyone going. Feist sings about survival “by the soundtrack of offshore lies” while rarely raising her voice above a whisper. Even when the song’s chorus adds in some more syrupy vocals and drum strikes, they’re somewhat stymied. There’s the vague outline of percussion but nothing permanent. This is a flickering ember rather than a roaring fire.

Hug of Thunder is out July 7 via Arts & Crafts.
