Sometimes cover art is all you need to know what you’re going to get. In the case of “Baby I,” a collaboration between Bute, Scotland native Ryan Docherty and the enigmatic producer Nite Hands, it’s a transfixing, seductive late-night groove. There’s a warmth to the track, not unlike those red bulbs, but it’s also cool to the touch. The piped-in vocals, which soulfully ache, are a nebulous blur. Docherty and Nite Hands’ aquatic drums crisscross with their faltering synths at near perfect angles. Every single piece is moving here, but somehow they feel stuck. The principles here are resigned to be on that dancefloor, alone, staring up at those lights. Trying to forget what’s happening, or what has happened.
