When you’ve been in and around music for 35 years and you’re just now releasing the first song under your own name, you make it like this. You cover it in razor-wire, jab a couple of knives into the speakers, douse acid on the mic and deliver incantations that would make the campfire scene in The Witch seem quaint. Kim Gordon has absolutely nothing to prove at this point. She was an essential component of one of the most important rock bands ever. What else needs to go on the résumé? You can ride that out forever and no one would fault you. Which is a large part of what makes the beguiling “Murdered Out” so great. It didn’t need to exist, but it does. And not only does it exist, it stands as one of the loudest and fiercest things Gordon has done in a long while. Not bad for someone who could be resting on their laurels.
